Access Center
From Overwhelming to Overcoming – Support is Available
Our Behavioral Health Access Center is located within our Heart of the City Health Center in downtown Grand Rapids. This entry point serves as the first contact for those seeking Behavioral Health services at Cherry Health and is designed to provide easy access to care when it is needed most. We aim to see individuals for an initial screening within 48 hours of their contacting us.
Individuals will meet with a Behavioral Health Clinician for a screening to determine a plan for care. They, along with a Community Health Worker, will ensure connections to both Cherry Health providers and other community resources are made.

Therapy
We work with patients to ease and heal the emotional pain of depression, anxiety, and much more using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, along with other types of therapy. You can work with our therapists to address a wide variety of concerns, including substance use, psychiatric disorders, stress or trauma, family and relationship issues, emotional or sexual abuse, and dealing with life’s unexpected challenges. We provide individual and group treatment as well as consultations with psychiatrists for medications.
In addition to our many behavioral health services for adults, we offer counseling for children and adolescents at Heart of the City Counseling Center. Therapists work with children to address behavior problems, mood concerns, trauma, challenges with family or friends, low self-esteem, communication issues, and other hurdles.
Psychiatric Care & Psychosocial Rehabilitation
We offer Psychiatric medication management to children, adolescents and adults through our outpatient Behavioral Health Counseling Center at Heart of the City Health Center. For new patients seeking these services, the Behavioral Health Consultants in the Access Center will provide an initial screening and assist with connection to our Psychiatry team.
Sheldon Clubhouse and Lakeside Clubhouse provide services to people living with mental illness. Using an evidence-based model, our Clubhouses help people develop new skills and personal relationships, seek education and employment, and ultimately develop both a sense of community and the ability to live independently. We believe that all our members have something to contribute, so staff and members work side by side at both clubhouses.
Sheldon Clubhouse and Lakeside Clubhouse are accredited by Clubhouse International and operate under its proven standards. Both clubhouses are open to patients of Cherry Health as well as others living with mental illness in our community.
Substance Use Treatment
Recovery from opiate use is possible. We help people break the cycle of addiction to heroin and other opioids, including prescription drugs, by providing Methadone, a medication that helps stabilize brain activity and manage withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to get and stay sober. From there, you can engage in therapy and other supportive services to assist in your successful recovery. Patients are referred to services through Network180.
The program includes:
- Comprehensive evaluation and assessment
- Integrated behavioral health therapy
- Integrated primary care medical home
- Individualized treatment planning
- Linkage with community support systems
- Recovery coaching services
- Aftercare planning
Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) is an approach to treatment and recovery from opiate use that combines traditional treatment, including individual therapy, along with medications that can help support recovery. Medications can offer multiple benefits, including reducing cravings and urges and minimizing the effects of withdrawal symptoms. In the MOUD setting, a board-licensed provider prescribes medications, including Suboxone/buprenorphine or Vivitrol/naltrexone. These services are offered in an outpatient/primary care setting which removes barriers to treatment. MOUD services include medication management, individual therapy, and recovery coaching services.
People often use alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, opiates, and other substances to alleviate anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. This approach may provide temporary relief, but over the long term, it hurts your body without addressing the root cause – and it keeps you from leading the life you deserve.
Cherry Health’s treatment programs have put many people on the path to a successful recovery. We help you reduce risky behaviors related to substance use, and if you have a behavioral health challenge you’re dealing with, we can treat that together. Experienced, credentialed therapists lead our traditional outpatient substance use treatment programs, which consist of one-on-one sessions lasting 45 to 60 minutes.
If your life circumstances make it difficult to cope with cravings, or if you have not been able to stabilize your substance use in a traditional outpatient setting, Cherry Health’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Heart of the City Health Center may be a good option for you.
IOP is designed for people requiring counseling more than once a week for substance use disorders. The program provides monitoring several times a week in a supportive group setting. The group meets three times a week for three hours, for an average of five weeks.
IOP is for people who can commit to a structured program requiring regular attendance and active participation. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan that honors your personal preferences within the guidelines of the program. We understand each person brings a different life experience to the program, and we are sensitive to everyone’s needs, personality, communication style, and readiness to change.
